Join broadcaster Andrew Green and soprano and performer, Dame Emma Kirby, as they re-enact the indomitable Maria Hackett's campaign to force change upon the Cathedral authorities.
2024 marks the 150th anniversary of the death of Maria Hackett, a remarkable woman who made a significant impact on the Cathedral and the care of choristers. Maria enrolled her seven year old orphaned cousin at the Cathedral Choir School and soon discovered that welfare conditions were poor, and that choristers did not receive proper housing, education or supervision. Concerned by these findings, Maria wrote to the Bishop of London, the Dean of St Paul’s and various members of the Cathedral clergy, but received only evasive replies. Maria then embarked on an extraordinary campaign using historic records and fiery correspondence.
This event is a colourful dramatisation, written and presented by Andrew Green, of Maria's battle for an investigation and for reform.
Tickets are £10 per person.
