Platinum Jubilee celebrations
Platinum Jubilee celebrations
This year, Her Majesty The Queen became the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service.
To mark this extraordinary occasion, we held a historic Service of Thanksgiving for The Queen’s reign on Friday 3rd June, part of a four day UK bank holiday weekend from Thursday 2nd to Sunday 5th June.
In May 2022, we opened a brand new exhibition Jubilee: St Paul’s, the Monarch and the Changing World. This special exhibition explores the history of Jubilee celebrations at St Paul’s Cathedral across three centuries. Using intriguing and ornate objects from St Paul’s extensive Archive and Collections, the exhibition tells the stories of Jubilee celebrations for four monarchs: King George III, Queen Victoria, King George V and HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Working with local schools, the exhibition includes designs for commemorative tea towels, designed by local school students in collaboration with the St Paul’s Schools and Family Learning team. Accompanying the exhibition is a special programme of events this year including late night openings in July and August.
Special outreach project 'Choir for the Queen' invited school children to create a musical gift for Her Majesty with Platinum Jubilee themed learning resources for children aged 4 to 15.
Service of Thanksgiving
St Paul’s held a historic Service of Thanksgiving for The Queen’s reign on Friday 3rd June at 11.30am.
The Service included bible readings, anthems, prayers and congregational hymns, expressing thankfulness for The Queen’s reign, faith and service; desire to foster unity and peace amongst all peoples; and commitment to care for God’s creation.
The Service included a new Anthem by Judith Weir, Master of The Queen’s Music, that sets to music words from the third Chapter of the Book of Proverbs.
Our Jubilee Exhibition
Jubilee: St Paul’s, the Monarch and the Changing World is a special exhibition at St Paul’s Cathedral that examines the Jubilee celebrations for King George III, King George V, Queen Victoria and the Silver, Golden and Diamond Jubilees of HM Queen Elizabeth II.
Choir for the Queen
We invited schools across the UK and around the world to create a musical gift for Her Majesty in the Platinum Jubilee year. Schools are invited to sing and record one of their favourite hymns, sharing on social media using the hashtag #ChoirfortheQueen.
Our Jubilee podcast
Produced and presented by Douglas Anderson, our Stories from St Paul's podcast series explores the fascinating history of royal jubilees celebrated at St Paul's.
