The Catholic nun and artist Sister Corita Kent believed that everything around us could provide a new and surprising way to experience God. She imagined a better world was possible by creating art that opens up conversations about faith, hope, and love, and her work featured Martin Luther King Jr and images of anti-war protests. She challenged perceptions and sometimes created controversy by transforming commercial slogans into poetic images that expressed God’s presence. With bold and vibrant colours, her art takes a powerful stand against racism, violence, and cruelty.
Join us as Ayla Lepine introduces Corita Kent’s work and reflects on how her Christian perspectives might inspire us to strive for peace and deepen faith.
The Revd Ayla Lepine is Associate Rector at St James’s Church, Piccadilly, before which she was Ahmanson Fellow in Art and Religion at the National Gallery. Originally from Canada, she moved to the UK in 2003 to study theology and art history. She is a trustee of the UK charity Art and Christianity, a Visiting Scholar at Sarum College, and a member of the St Paul’s Cathedral Visual Arts Committee.
