Jane Austen is not an overtly Christian writer, but her profound faith runs through her novels, subtly revealing their essence. Paula Hollingsworth says that her themes are not, as is generally thought, romance and marriage, but virtue, wisdom, and inner depth.
She will explore Austen’s life and faith, including how suffering changes her writing and faith. The afternoon will also focus on her most popular novel, Pride and Prejudice, reflecting on the journeys the main characters make, and what it reveals about her spirituality, about self-awareness and about how we should live.
The Revd Paula Hollingsworth is the Chaplain at St Paul’s Cathedral and author of The Spirituality of Jane Austen.
