Join Dr Siobhán Jolley for an enriching afternoon exploring the Easter story through art, with a particular focus on the captivating figure of Mary Magdalene. Through rich visuals and discussion, we will journey through artistic depictions across the centuries, examining themes of redemption, witness, and devotion. Step into the familiar Easter narrative from a fresh perspective—through the eyes of Mary Magdalene and the hands of renowned artists who have portrayed her.
In the first hour, we will reflect on the story of Jesus’ suffering and death through powerful works by artists including El Greco, Marc Chagall, Caravaggio, and Eugène Delacroix. We will explore themes of suffering, gendered violence, and the pivotal role of women who are present in the Gospels, revisiting Mary Magdalene’s experience of the Passion. In the second hour, we will focus on her witness to the resurrection, contemplating the profound impact of her encounter with the risen Christ and her enduring significance in Christian tradition. Art by Elisabetta Sirani, Titian, and Graham Sutherland will guide our reflection on the role of storytelling and bearing witness.
This workshop invites participants of all backgrounds to engage with art and reflection, with no prior knowledge of art required. It combines education, personal insight, and meaningful discussion in an accessible and welcoming environment. Extend your experience by attending Evensong at St Paul’s following the workshop.
